Ford Hits 55 MPG Mark

With up to 41 highway miles per gallon (mpg), the 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid Package seems as good as it gets. But, in their quintessential barrier-breaking fashion, Ford has created a new Focus variant that promises to deliver 55 highway mpg. Those numbers make it the most fuel-conservative, non-hybrid family car on the road.

Officially coined the 2012 Ford Focus ECOnetic, the new 55-hwy-mpg trooper is fitted with a small turbocharged diesel powerplant. The exact output of horsepower and torque are expected to be released coinciding with the Focus ECOnetic's imminent grand debut.

In the mean time, Pacifico Marple Ford LINCOLN, serving the greater Broomall area, can tell you the hatch compact is equipped with stop-start technology, and specially designed active grille shutters. While stop-start ensures the vehicle doesn't run at a standstill, the dynamic grille shutters increase the car's aerodynamics and decrease its drag coefficient at high speeds. Other additions aimed at raising the bar on fuel economy are low-rolling resistance tires and low-friction oils.

At this time, the enviously efficient 2012 Ford Focus ECOnetic will be available only in markets across the pond. The logic is that the cost of producing the necessary diesel engine in the States is substantially higher, while demand is drastically lower. That said, one of Ford's top competitors has decided to take the deep dive and bring a diesel to the U.S., starting in 2013. That leaves two years for the powers that be at Ford to change their minds.
